Tips for travelling with children by train
Reserving a seat
Book and reserve your seats in advance. Remember children under five won’t have a seat reservation, so you might want to arrive ready to board early, alternatively, you could buy a child ticket to guarantee a reserved seat. Find your reserved seat on the Seat Plan.
Baby changing facilities
When booking a seat with your family and younger children, we do have facilities onboard that cater for babies and toddlers. All our toilets onboard have a Baby Changing facility, however the toilets in Coaches A & E toilets do have more space to make baby changing easier for you on the go. To locate where your reserved seat is positioned, please see the Seating Plan. We have onboard facilities to cater for babies and toddlers. All toilets have baby changing facilities, however, the toilets in Coaches A & E toilets do have more space to make baby changing easier for you on the go. Take a virtual tour of our Lumo fleet to locate all our onboard facilities.
Pushchairs & prams
Pushchairs & Prams are welcome onboard but will need to follow a few dos and don’ts before you jump onboard with us. Our onboard luggage policy gives you all the information you need on what to take onboard for your next train journey with us.
Do
Collapse your pram or pushchair before boarding the train.
Store in the luggage storage areas.
Seek assistance from our Lumo luggage helpers or our onboard ambassadors when necessary.
Don’t
We kindly ask you not to store anything in the dedicated wheelchair-user spaces or around the exit door areas.
Leave babies & toddlers to sleep or lay on their own dedicated seat. They must travel on an adult’s lap while asleep.

- Family and Friends Railcard: You can save money on Family days out with a Family and Friends railcard which gives you 1/3 off adult tickets and 60% off child tickets when you travel together. Up to 4 adults travelling together with up to 4 kids.
- Two together which provides 1/3 off most train fares around the UK including to our destinations, London, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
Children over 16
- 16 to 17 Saver Railcard, designed especially for 16-17-year-olds, gives you a massive 50% off most rail fares!
- 16 to 25 Young Persons Railcard offers a 1/3 off travel on an annual basis.
