North East charity on the right track: Volunteers raise over £2,200 for Daft as a Brush on Lumo journeys

Volunteers hit the £2,200 mark for Daft as a Brush through Lumo journeys

Published 26 Mar 2026

Volunteers from Newcastle-based Daft as a Brush Cancer Patient Care are celebrating raising £2,250 in customer donations on Lumo journeys between Newcastle and Edinburgh.

The charity provides free-of-charge transport for cancer patients from across the North of England to get to their vital chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. Volunteers from the organisation have joined a handful of Lumo services during March, selling limited edition joint Lumo and Daft as a Brush pin badges.

The rail operator announced that Daft as a Brush would be its official charity partner of the year at the start of 2026, with customers also able to donate any Lumo Delay Repay claims to the charity easily if they choose to do so.

Lumo, a company that’s proudly based in the North East, is a dedicated supporter of the communities it serves. The operator has a track record in supporting good causes and helps boost social value in communities along the East Coast Main Line.

Jen Clare, Service Delivery Director at Lumo, said: “Welcoming the wonderful volunteers from Daft as a Brush onboard is a total joy. They bring a real positive energy and the impressive amount of money they’ve raised so far shows just how much our customers have embraced the important work they do.

“This fundraising is just one element of our partnership with the team at the charity and I look forward to working with them throughout the coming weeks and months.”

Daft as a Brush is currently making the important transition to using fully electric ambulances. Lumo, meanwhile, also embraces this sustainable approach with 100% electric trains operating on all of its journeys on the East Coast Main Line.

Daft as a Brush CEO, Andrea Glover is incredibly proud of the success partnering with Lumo: “Through the generosity of Lumo customers, whether via onboard donations, pin badge sales or Delay Repay contributions, together we’ve been able to make a real difference to the families we support.

“Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us continue providing vital transport for cancer patients. We are truly grateful to everyone who has supported Daft as a Brush through their journeys with Lumo and our volunteers look forward to meeting new friends on board soon.”
The charity service involves collecting and transporting patients in a safe and comfortable environment from where they are living to where they will be having their treatment. If required, a volunteer companion will stay with the patient during their treatment.

The patient is returned to their home in readiness for their next appointment. The charity completes thousands of cancer patient journeys each year with a passionate team of hundreds of volunteers and a large fleet of iconic blue ambulances.
