Lumo proudly supports fun new transport exhibition

Bringing train travel to life through play

Published 04 Aug 2026

Lumo, recently named the UK’s best value rail operator, is proudly supporting a fun new transport-themed exhibition at Newcastle’s Discovery Museum, helping to inspire the next generation of transport enthusiasts through imaginative play and hands-on experiences.

Running until 28 February 2027, Things That Go! is the first exhibition to be staged in Discovery Museum’s newly renovated Special Exhibitions Gallery.

Designed with younger families in mind, the free exhibition showcases transport-themed objects from the museum’s collections, many of which have never previously been displayed.

Visitors will be able to explore a wide range of transport-related exhibits, from boats and bicycles to tractors, trains and even prams.

As part of its support for the exhibition, Lumo features prominently within the gallery through a life-size play train complete with sound buttons, giving young visitors the opportunity to experience train travel through imaginative and interactive play. An electric model Lumo train will also run continuously around a display featuring historic transport objects from the museum’s collections.

The exhibition has been inspired by the much-loved Things That Go picture books that have entertained young children for generations. Exhibits are grouped into themed sections including By the Sea, To the Rescue, On the Building Site and On the Farm, encouraging families to discover how transport plays a role in everyday life.

The partnership reflects Lumo’s commitment to supporting communities across the regions it serves. Headquartered in Newcastle, the all-electric operator connects destinations across the UK through affordable, sustainable and customer-focused rail travel.

Richard Salkeld, Director of Communications and Partnerships at Lumo, said: “Discovery Museum is one of Newcastle’s great attractions, celebrating the ideas, inventions and innovation that have helped shape our region.

“As a Newcastle-based rail operator, we’re proud to support Things That Go!, bringing our all-electric trains into the exhibition through imaginative play and helping inspire families to think differently about the future of travel.”

Keith Merrin, Director of North East Museums, said: “The new Special Exhibitions Gallery has transformed a tired space into a bright, contemporary gallery, enabling Discovery Museum to share more of its collections that would otherwise be hidden from view in our stores for visitors to enjoy.

“Things That Go! is a fun way to bring out items from the collection that relate to the theme of transport and, whilst it has been created with younger families in mind, there are some fascinating and evocative objects on display for all generations to explore.”

Discovery Museum is free to visit and booking is not required. The museum is open weekdays from 10am to 4pm and weekends from 11am to 4pm.

Lumo recently scored an impressive 90% overall customer satisfaction score in the Rail Customer Experience Survey (RCXS), placing the operator firmly among the three highest-performing long-distance train operators for the period covering October 2025 to March 2026.
