Newcastle Charity Receives Birthday Boost From Lumo

Homeless charity People’s Kitchen to receive fundraising support as part of Lumo’s 2nd birthday activities

Published 25 Oct 2023

Lumo is celebrating its second year of service and will be raising money for People’s Kitchen on the 25th and 26th October, while raising awareness of the charity to its passengers.

Over the two days, Lumo staff will raise awareness of People’s Kitchen on the platform of Newcastle Station and on its social media feeds.

People’s Kitchen supports homeless and vulnerable people across Newcastle to fight hunger and loneliness. The charities vital services include providing meals, everyday necessities, and a friendly face to talk to – things that can so often be taken for granted. Martijn Gilbert, Managing Director of Lumo, said: “We saw the opportunity to use our second anniversary to celebrate the vital work People’s Kitchen do. We bring tens of thousands of people home to Newcastle every month, but rarely do we stop to think about those without a home to go to.

“People’s Kitchen rely on donations to survive so we hope our passengers will contribute to a fantastic cause.

“People’s Kitchen provides crucial services to the most vulnerable people in our home city. We believe everyone should be treated with respect and dignity. We feel it’s appropriate, given the stark figures on homelessness in Newcastle, that we work with our colleagues and customers to raise funds, rather than celebrate our own success.”

Maggie Pavlou, Trustee of People’s Kitchen said:We’re thrilled that Lumo has chosen to celebrate its second birthday with a focus on our charity. We see every day how important People’s Kitchen is to the most vulnerable in Newcastle, and any support for our vital service is hugely appreciated.

“It was great to welcome the Lumo team to our facilities this week, with Martijn getting his sleeves rolled up in our kitchen. We’d like to thank Lumo for choosing our charity as a partner for the last year and helping us drive change and raise awareness of homelessness throughout Newcastle and beyond.”

With an estimated 1,250 people in the North East completely homeless, including 360 children, the money raised will go directly to vulnerable people in need of food and shelter in Newcastle during the winter months.
