Lumo partners with The People's Kitchen

Lumo launches partnership with Newcastle charity

Published 25 Oct 2021

Lumo has announced a partnership with one of the North East’s best-loved charities, The People’s Kitchen.

Founded in 1984 by Alison Kay, The People’s Kitchen is run entirely by unpaid volunteers who prepare, cook, and serve between 180 and 220 meals a day, 365 days a year, for Friends of the charity. Beyond this, volunteers provide over-the-phone support and guidance in a bid to boost wellbeing for those who feel isolated, and signpost to other available services to tackle loneliness.

Selected through an employee vote as their chosen charity partner, Lumo plans to deliver volunteering days to support the efforts of the kitchen.

As part of The People’s Kitchen’s annual Advent where Friends of the charity are gifted essential items each day leading up to Christmas, Lumo has donated blankets to help those sleeping rough this Christmas.

Managing Director Helen Wylde commented:For many people this winter will be a time of hunger and loneliness, which is why we’re grateful to be joining forces with The People’s Kitchen. No-one should have to spend Christmas alone, and we’ll be doing all we can to support the volunteers and Friends of the charity during the festive period and all year round, too.

“Newcastle is a wonderful, friendly city and events like these highlight the true value of organisations like The People’s Kitchen and its services in helping people out of homelessness and loneliness. We look forward to building a long-term partnership with the charity and supporting them to continue the excellent work they are already doing for the local community.”

Maggie Pavlou, Trustee, People’s Kitchen, said: “Loneliness is often one of the most devastating things about sleeping rough and even something as simple as having a chat can make all the difference – especially if you can point them to support available. A hot meal can also act as a lifeline for people who need a safe space to eat with Friends who understand and care for each other.

“We’re thrilled to be selected as Lumo’s charity partner and look forward to continuing the working relationship to support even more people in Newcastle who need it.”
