Lumo completes fleet-wide seat upgrade, enhancing customer experience

We have announced the completion of a major update across our entire fleet

Published 23 Oct 2025

Lumo, the all-electric open access rail operator connecting London with North-East England and Edinburgh, has announced the completion of a major upgrade across its entire fleet, refreshing 1,930 seats across its five 125mph Hitachi-built trains.

Lumo has completed the seat upgrade ahead of the much-anticipated launch of its trains to Glasgow from December, with selected 2026 advance tickets starting from just £33.90 when customers book direct.

The upgrade introduces a brighter, more durable seat fabric which retains Lumo’s signature electric blue colour scheme. Customers continue to enjoy generous legroom, winged headrests, individual table lights and large tray tables. This all forms part of Lumo’s commitment to offering comfort, choice and sustainable travel.

Jen Clare, Service Delivery Director at Lumo, said: "Completing this seat upgrade across our fleet is a significant step in enhancing the onboard experience for our customers, ahead of our Glasgow service launching this December. It reflects our ongoing investment in comfort and sustainability and demonstrates our ambition to make rail travel the preferred choice for more people."

This latest milestone comes as Lumo approaches its fifth year of operation, having contributed to an additional 1.4 million journeys annually and encouraging more travellers to choose its low-cost, low-carbon alternative to air travel or driving. Lumo’s electric trains are 95% more environmentally friendly than equivalent flights, with fares between London and Edinburgh averaging around £55.

The company was recently awarded the ServiceMark Accreditation by the Institute of Customer Service, a respected national standard that honours organisations with excellent customer service and a dedication to ongoing improvement. The transformational refurbishment was carried out in Scotland thanks to a range of suppliers and partners.
