Our top things to do this summer on our route

Looking for fun summer plans? Look no further!

PublishBlogs 26 Jun 2025

Summer is officially here, and we all know what that means – sunny weather, longer days, and plenty of outdoor activities! Whether you’re after great views, fab beaches, or new picnic spots, we’ve got you covered!

Take a look at our favourite activities to do on our route this summer:

Try paddleboarding in Longsands

The North East has some amazing beaches (seriously). If you’re planning a trip to Newcastle, you should definitely fit at least one of them into your itinerary.

If you’re up for something different, booking a surf or paddleboarding lesson in one of the surfing schools in Longsands is always a safe bet (for those of you who’re more experienced, equipment rentals are also available).

Want to finish the day with a nice meal or a sweet treat? Tynemouth offers a great range of foodie options, from local favourite doughnut shop Deep North to the award-winning Riley’s Fish Shack.

Take a stroll through Jesmond Dene

Escape the bustle of the city in one of Newcastle’s greatest parks. Jesmond Dene offers a fabulous outdoor space to enjoy with the whole family, with winding paths, waterfalls and beautiful green fields.

Don’t miss Pet’s Corner – a free attraction that little ones will absolutely love. Here, you can meet sheep, goats, rabbits and more! They even have a play area for under 8s.

Have a picnic at Starbank Park

Tucked away in Newhaven, this beautiful Victorian garden is a true hidden gem (almost like a secret escape from busy Edinburgh!).

The park is beautifully maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers, the Friends of Starbank Park, who often organise free community events. Whether you want to soak in the sea breeze, have a little picnic in the grass or simply take a break from sightseeing, Starbank Park is definitely worth a visit.

Reconnect with nature in Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden

If you’re all about nature, Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden is a must-see, especially in the summer season.

Home to one of the world’s largest plant collections, the garden offers a stunning 70 acres of landscape with lush greenery, plants of all over the globe and panoramic views of Edinburgh’s skyline. Best of all? Entry is free!

Cool off in Hampstead Heath Swimming Ponds

Need to beat the London summer heat? Why not take a dip in one of the city’s favourite outdoor swimming spots?

These natural bathing ponds are surrounded by nature, making them the perfect spot to have a float with friends, sunbathe, or do a quick lap.

They have three separate ponds available: one for ladies, one for men, and a third one for mixed groups. Tickets start at just £2.90 and can be booked here.

Watch a film at Vauxhall Summer Screen

Visiting London this July? Head over to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens for free outdoor movie nights accompanied by some of London’s top street vendors, drink stalls and more!

All films start at 7pm and they’re free to watch. You can find the programme here.

Book your tickets to Edinburgh, London or Newcastle with Lumo today on our website or app. For the best value tickets book early. Tickets go on sale up to 26 weeks in advance.
